SINCE 1910

1910

Charles Tivol fulfills his dream and opens a jewelry store that bears his family's name in downtown Kansas City's Altman Building on Petticoat Lane.

1923

Harold Tivol is born on September 28, 1923 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City.

1946

Charles Tivol's son, Harold, returns safely from World War II and begins his career at TIVOL.

1947

The TIVOL reputation for quality, integrity and customer service reaches a new high as the store begins assisting President Harry S. Truman and his wife, Bess, with their jewelry and timepiece needs.

1948

Among Harold's first major projects at TIVOL is working with his father to relocate the store from downtown Kansas City to the Country Club Plaza.

1951

Charles Tivol greets guests at the newly opened TIVOL on the Country Club Plaza. The store is located at 220 Nichols Road, which remains TIVOL's address to this day. The 1951 store is about one-third the size of the present day location, however.

1977

TIVOL recovers from a devastating 1977 flood that kills 25 people and causes nearly $100 million in damage to Plaza-area properties.

1978

Third generation family member Cathy Tivol (pictured with Harold, her father) joins the company's management team in 1978.

1984

After an extensive search during 1984, TIVOL finds the perfect advertising spokesman to represent the store: Harold Tivol.

1984

The Harold campaign would become a Kansas City institution that lasts for almost 20 years. From 1984 through the early 2000s he is featured in dozens of witty print ads and TV commercials, none of which are more fondly remembered than the infamous "wig" ad.

1988

Harold Tivol receives the lifetime achievement award from Modern Jeweler magazine.

1990

TIVOL establishes the Mollie Tivol Alzheimer's Family Resource Center. Mollie was Harold's mother and Cathy's grandmother who suffered from the disease. (Pictured from left: Harold's wife Ruthie, Harold, Cathy and Mollie in portrait.)

1994

TIVOL opens the new Hawthorne Plaza location at 119th and Roe in Overland Park, accomodating the growing population of Johnson County, Kansas.

2000

To celebrate its 90th anniversary, TIVOL hosted a gala that raised more than $200,000 for the Mollie Tivol Alzheimer's Family Resource Center and the National Alzheimer's Association. Guest of Honor was Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, daughter of Rita Hayworth.

2010

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the opening of the store, TIVOL implemented the 100 Acts of Kindness, benefitting various local and national charities.

2011

In January of 2011, Cathy Tivol's daughter and Carelle's Marketing Director, Brooke Tivol McGrath, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 28. Carelle created the Brooke Leaf Collection of jewelry in her honor, with proceeds benefiting young women interested in a career in the jewelry industry.

2011

In May 2011, Hunter Tivol McGrath (shown here with his mother and grandfather) joined the TIVOL team as a salesperson at the Hawthorne location. He represents the family's fourth generation at the store.

2012

TIVOL created a new campaign called Two Stores, A Thousand Stories. This commercial, The Proposal, is the first in the series.

Media coverage of the event includes a story on E! News and The Today Show.
