Happy Valentine's Day

Let’s face it, one of the best parts of Valentine’s Day is the anticipation of it all. It is something to look forward to in the cold days of winter! Whether you’re booking an indulgent dinner on the town, eyeing something sparkly, or planning a night in with your sweetheart, there are so many ways to put a smile on their face. But first, let's take a little dive into the history of Valentine's Day.

Did you know that the origins of Valentine's day actually had very little to do with date nights and chocolate?

The Feast of St. Valentine was established by Pope Gelasius in 496 CE to be celebrated on February 14 to St. Valentine of Rome, who died on that same date in 269 CE. According to a very early tradition, after being imprisoned, St. Valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his jailer. A countless variety of later additions to the legend have better related it to the theme of love. According to an 18th-century embellishment of the legend, he wrote the jailer's daughter a letter signed "Love, your Valentine" as a farewell before his execution. Another addition to the legends claim that St. Valentine performed weddings for Christian soldiers who were forbidden to marry due to a Roman emperor edict decreeing married soldiers did not make good warriors.

Because of these legends, St. Valentine became known as the patron saint of love, thus connecting the day of February 14th to a day of the idea of love, romance and friendship.

As the years passed, the holiday grew sweeter. Famed poets like Chaucer and Shakespeare romanticized it in their work, and it gained popularity throughout Britain and the rest of Europe. Handmade paper cards became the popular way to express your love in the Middle Ages.

It wasn't until 1868 that Cadbury created the iconic heart-shaped boxes filled with delicious chocolates. In the second half of the 20th century, the practice of exchanging cards was extended to all manner of gifts, such as giving jewelry, a tradition we're quite fond of.
