Hanukkah is quickly approaching. This year the holiday begins in the evening on Thursday, December 10th and concludes Friday night, December 18th. Traditionally, Hanukkah has been considered a “minor” festival. However, today it is one of the most beloved Jewish holidays, full of light, joy, and family celebration.
Referred to as "The Festival of Lights", the Hanukkah Menorah is symbolic to this holiday: a candelabrum including eight lights in a row with a ninth separated in height or spacing from the rest (the shamash), which is used to light the other candles. It dates back to when the temple was rededicated by Maccabee, which included relighting the menorahs. The soldiers only had enough oil to light the menorah for a single night. However, the story goes that the little bit of oil lasted for eight full nights. And so - the Miracle of Hanukkah and the eight nights of celebration. These nights are meant to remind us of the holiness of the holiday and the importance of friends, family and illuminating the goodness in all our lives.
