Jewelmer has the philosophy that man cannot create the perfect pearl; man can only nurture the environment that will create it. Pearl farming is a sustainable enterprise, in that it has always been linked to environmental conservation. Jewelmer is humbled by the fact that it has had the opportunity not only to drive the pearl industry forward, but to make a lasting impact in the state of the environment. This enterprise allows them to create a community where man works in harmony with nature.
Jewelmer’s pearl farms are located in Palawan, which is hailed as the Philippines’ last frontier and one of the world’s most pristine environments. The business of pearl farming has created multifarious jobs for the Palawan community. Up to 377 precise steps—a total of five years from the birth of the Pinctada Maxima—are undertaken to see if a golden pearl can emerge from its mother oyster. This meticulous process has grown to involve and benefit the communities whose livelihood is dependent on the sea to survive.
Pearl farms are considered biogenerators. They help cultivate the richness of marine life, without depleting the surrounding natural resources. In 2006, Mr. Jacques Branellec and Mr. Manuel Cojuangco established the Save Palawan Seas Foundation, with the goal of providing long-term conservation strategies for Palawan’s marine environment, as well as alternative sources of livelihood for its coastal communities. Some of the projects of the foundation include free range chicken farming, seaweed farming, egg production, coral reforestation, tree-planting, and handicraft training activities. To help in Palawan’s community development, Jewelmer, together with the Save Palawan Seas Foundation, spearheads regular medical mission programs. These operations have created a positive ripple effect that extends well beyond the workers of the farms, reaching even the outlying communities.
Jewelmer also launched the #WeCreateHope campaign. Proceeds from Jewelmer’s Pearl of Hope bracelet will fund the initiatives of Save Palawan Seas Foundation.
Part of the proceeds will benefit the Save Palawan Seas Foundation, championing environmental conservation and providing sustainable livelihood in Palawan communities. A South Sea pearl is a testament of hope, that we are all artists, advocates, and creators.
Jewelmer together with Save Palawan Seas Foundation continues to initiate, develop and facilitate livelihood programs and activities to give beneficiary communities income-generating opportunities.
