Aquamarine | The Birthstone of March

A perfect birthstone for March, aquamarine creates a beautiful accent to the fresh colors of spring wardrobes. Aquamarine gets its name from Latin and literally means “seawater” - a tribute to its beautiful blue color. 

For thousands of years, aquamarine has naturally been associated with the ocean and even its fantastical creature the mermaid. 

The Romans believed the sea-blue gem washed ashore after spilling out of the mermaid's treasure chest.

As the March birthstone, it aligns perfectly with the zodiac sign Pisces, a water sign. In the past, not only did people believe mermaids introduced humans to aquamarine, they also thought it to have powers of protection for all who sail the seas.

Aquamarine has long been known for its rich color and is a symbol of youth, health and hope. Its mesmerizing color ranges from a very pale blue to a deep blue, the finest specimens being the deepest in color.

Because of these alleged powers, aquamarine has always been a popular gemstone. In ancient times, the aquamarine was believed to provide courage in those who wore them. Ancient Indians wore aquamarine in amulets, and the Egyptians carved it into talismans. 

Today, aquamarine is still considered an “all purpose” healing gem as it is said to treat spiritual, psychological, physiological disorders and diseases. Working with the stone improves one’s overall sense of well-being. 

Be careful though, an aquamarine takes a little care and love to maintain its beautiful color and shine. The best way to clean your aquamarine jewelry is with plain, warm water, a very mild soap and an old tooth brush. Once you have washed the stone, make sure you rinse it off well with plain water. Be sure to use warm water instead of hot water. Avoiding sudden temperature changes will reduce the risk of damage. If you take care of it, it will take care of you!
